Operations and Competitiveness - Where do you fit in the corporate mission and strategy?

Background:

Effective management efforts must have a mission so the firm knows where it is headed and a strategy so it knows how to get there. In addition to a mission statement and an effective strategic plan, firms must build and staff the organization. Managers must work with subordinates to build plans, budgets, and programs that will successfully implement strategies that achieve missions. At times, firms hire third party "consultants" to aid in staffing and building an organization.

Questions for Thought:

1. What happens to a firm that does not have a concrete mission statement? Have you ever worked for a company that does not have a mission statement?

2. Why are third party consultants hired to help in staffing and building an organization?

3. Why do the employees in the video clip from "Office Space" appear to be threatened by the consultant "Bob"?
