About the Tutorial

Latin for Plant People is a one-hour interactive tutorial created and delivered in Nearpod, an interactive presentation platform that combines slide-based content with built-in learner activities. The tutorial is designed for adults and teens who garden, grow houseplants, or enjoy nature and want to understand what plant names tell us.

Across 12 slides, learners explore the history of plant taxonomy through video and audio, practice applying botanical Latin through a draw-it activity and a matching-pairs game, consider current issues in plant nomenclature, and share their opinions on a collaborative board. Original photos, audio narration, and curated resources are drawn from work at the Pitt County Arboretum. For the full list of digital resources used to build the tutorial, see the Resources page.
