EDTC 7040: Instructional Strategies for Distance Learning
This demonstration explores interactive storytelling through Twine, a tool for creating nonlinear, choice-driven narratives. Future development would incorporate graphics and images to enrich the story environment and deepen learner immersion.
The sun rises over Athens, casting golden light on marble temples. Today marks the City Dionysia, the festival honoring Dionysus, the God of wine, theater, and transformation. (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))
You’ve donned your finest chiton (a long tunic worn in ancient Greece) and joined the crowd at the city gates. Priests prepare the sacred statue for its journey to the Theater of Dionysus.
You carry a basket of offerings—figs, honey cakes, and ivy. What will you do?
* [[Place your offerings at the altar->Altar]]
* [[Ask the priest about the ritual->Ask Priest]]
* [[Sneak away to meet your friend who’s performing->Meet Friend]]

You step forward and place your offerings carefully on the altar. The priest nods approvingly. "Dionysus will favor you," he says. (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))

The priest explains: "These offerings honor Dionysus and ensure a good harvest. Each item has meaning—figs for fertility, honey cakes for sweetness in life." (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))

You slip away and find your friend rehearsing lines for a tragedy. "The chorus is nervous," they whisper. "Will you help us prepare?" (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))

The crowd moves toward the Theater of Dionysus. Music fills the air, and the statue of the god gleams in the sunlight. Soon, the plays will begin. (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))

You help the actors rehearse. The words echo themes of fate and divine justice. "Remember," your friend says, "the audience sees this as worship, not just entertainment." (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))

You remain with the crowd, watching the civic leaders take their seats. The festival feels like a blend of religion and politics—every gesture reinforcing community identity. (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))
Reflection: How did public rituals strengthen civic unity in ancient Athens?

You slip into the temple and find a priest preparing a secret rite. He glances at you. "Few outsiders witness this. Do you wish to join?" (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))

Before you leave the festival, reflect: (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))
*What did your choices reveal about ancient Greek religion?*
*How did your role shape your experience?*
*What surprised you about the connection between drama and worship?*

You witness a hushed ceremony involving torches and whispered prayers. The priest explains: "Mystery rites reveal truths only to the initiated." (enchant:?passage,(b4r:"double")+(b4r-colour:black))
Reflection: Why were some rites kept secret? What does this tell us about ancient religion?
