Description
Structure of American Industry will examine the
history, structure, conduct, performance, and economics of a variety of
Textbooks
·
The
Structure of American Industry, 11th Edition by Walter Adams and James Brock. (The 11th
& 10th editions of this text are on reserve at Joyner Library).
·
Barron’s supplements the text for current
industry events.
Grading
Semester grades will be determined by
quizzes (20%), writing assignments (20%), and three tests (20% each). Late
writing assignments will not be accepted. No make-up quizzes will be given.
I will use a ten-point grading scale: A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, D = 60-69, F
< 60.
Cell
phones & Calculators
I
discourage students from bringing cell phones to class. If you must bring your phone, turn the ringer off. If your cell phone goes off during class time,
you forfeit the ability to answer all extra credit questions on the next test.
Simple (non-graphing) calculators are allowed for tests.
Attendance
Class attendance is optional, however, students who regularly miss class usually
fail.
Tests: Three closed-book exams will be given.
These tentative test dates are rough estimates of when you can expect a test.
Test dates are subject to change. If you miss a test you must (1) contact me
within 48 hours of the exam AND (2) provide written documentation for your
absence. Failure to do EITHER (1) or (2) will result in a grade of 0 on the
missed test. No exceptions!
Writing
Assignment: This is a writing intensive class. Students will be required to review an
article in the Journal of Economic
Perspectives and write two article reviews on a related topic from
Barron’s. A final paper, due the last day of class, will merge these three
article reviews into one comprehensive and cohesive document.

Emergencies: Information
is available at the ECU emergency alert website (http://www.ecu.edu/alert) and the ECU emergency information hotline
(252-328-0062).
Academic Integrity
All students that
violate the ECU Student Honor Code (http://www.ecu.edu/studenthandbook/)
will receive an “F” in the course. All violators will be turned over to the
Academic Integrity Board. All students must sign an honor pledge for each test &
homework (unsigned tests will not be graded).
